Ok, so I found some vinyl at Jo-ann Fabrics in the remnant bin and tried this. It worked OK except for my last seam which slipped out and my vinyl seemed to be too brittle to hand stitch it into place so I guess it was a "lesson learned" project - make sure your seam allowances are big enough.

You've inspired me. I'm getting off work early today so I'm going to try to find some vinyl without going to Ikea...I hate that place. Wish me luck!
